Message Outline

Isaiah 9:2-7 (NIV)

2The people walking in darkness

  have seen a great light;

on those living in the land of deep darkness

  a light has dawned.

3You have enlarged the nation

  and increased their joy;

 they rejoice before you

as people rejoice at the harvest,

 as warriors rejoice

  when dividing the plunder.

4For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,

  you have shattered

 the yoke that burdens them,

  the bar across their shoulders,

  the rod of their oppressor.

5Every warrior’s boot used in battle

and every garment rolled in blood

 will be destined for burning,

will be fuel for the fire.

6For to us a child is born,

to us a son is given,

and the government will be on his shoulders.

 And he will be called

  Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

  Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

7Of the greatness of his government and peace

  there will be no end.

He will reign on David’s throne

  and over his kingdom,

 establishing and upholding it

  with justice and righteousness

from that time on and forever.

The zeal of the Lord Almighty

  will accomplish this.

1. Jesus is light in the darkness.

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. Genesis 1:1–4 (NIV)

2. Jesus is light in our hearts.

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given.

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light. Ephesians 5:8 (NIV)

3. Jesus is light in the world.

Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end.

“You are the light of the world… let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14–16 (NIV)

There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever. Revelation 22:5 (NIV)

Let us walk in the light of the Lord. Isaiah 2:5 (NIV)
