Summer in the Psalms

4. A People of Lament

Message Outline

Psalm 137:1-6 (NIV)

¹ By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept

  when we remembered Zion.

2 There on the poplars

  we hung our harps,

3 for there our captors asked us for songs,

  our tormentors demanded songs of joy;

they said, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”

4 How can we sing the songs of the Lord

  while in a foreign land?

5 If I forget you, Jerusalem,

may my right hand forget its skill.

6 May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth

if I do not remember you,

if I do not consider Jerusalem

  my highest joy.

The Church is a people who declare God’s praise…

I will praise your name for ever and ever… One generation commends your works to another.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 1 Peter 2:9–10 (NIV)
