Summer in the Psalms - Awe

Message Outline

Psalm 8 (NIV)

1Lord, our Lord,

how majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory

    above the heavens.

2Through the praise of children and infants

you have established a stronghold against your

enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.

3When I consider your heavens,

the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars,

which you have set in place,

4what are mere mortals that you are mindful of them,

human beings that you care for them?

5You have made them a little lower than the heavenly

beings

and crowned them with glory and honor.

6You made them rulers over the works of your hands;

you put everything under their feet: 7 all flocks and herds,

and the animals of the wild,

8the birds in the sky,

and the fish in the sea,

all that swim the paths of the seas.

9Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Everyday AWE

1. Pay Attention

You have set your glory in the heavens… When I consider the heavens

Awe is the feeling of being in the presence of something vast that transcends your current understanding of the world... We can find awe, then, in eight wonders of life: moral beauty, collective effervescence, nature, music, visual design, spirituality and religion, life and death, and epiphany… It should not surprise that people who feel even five minutes a day of everyday awe are more curious about art, music, poetry, new scientific discoveries, philosophy, and questions about life and death. They feel more comfortable about mysteries, with that which cannot be explained.

–Dacher Keltner, Awe: The Transforming Power of Everyday Wonder

2. Wonder

Lord, our Lord

Personal connection with God: Lord, Our Lord

Childlike curiosity: Through the praise of children and infants

Our significance in the vast universe: The heavens, the work of your hands, the moon and the stars…What are mere mortals that you are mindful of them?

3. Practice Expression

How majestic is your name in all the earth!

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science. He to whom the emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand wrapped in awe, is as good as dead; his eyes are closed. –Albert Einstein
