Esquema del Mensaje

John 20:30-31 (NIV)

30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Juan 20:30-31 (NVI)

Our perspective is limited

Jesus performed many other signs…which are not recorded in this book

Nuestra perspectiva es limitada.

Jesús realizó muchas otras señales… que no están registradas en este libro.

What you believe matters

by believing you may have life…

For the word of God is not received by faith if it flits about in the top of the brain, but when it takes root in the depth of the heart that it may be an invincible defense to withstand and drive off all the stratagems of temptation -John Calvin

-Juan Calvino

Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. John 14:1

Juan 6:29

Small Group Questions

As needed, refer to the Order of Worship and Resources for sermon video, message outline, and small group questions print version.

CONNECT WITH EACH OTHER

Before beginning your time with John and the message, consider catching each other up on your time since you last met together.

CONNECT WITH GOD (Use the below practice or choose one from a previous week.)

Praying with the Psalms: Follow the steps below in your journaling time. Begin and end with prayer.

  • Pray expectantly and with a posture of openness.
  • Slowly read Psalm 40:1-10 in whatever Bible translation you prefer.
  • Journal by writing or drawing. There is no prompt. Let your response flow—whatever it is.
  • Pray once more and ask God to lead you throughout your week in reflection and discernment as you remember Psalm 40.

CONNECT WITH EACH OTHER

Together: Read John 20:30-31

  • Before digging into the scripture and message more, pray together. Ask the Holy Spirit to illuminate and enlighten, and to speak to each one of you through the passage.
  • Alone: Reflect/journal on the following prompt:
  • How have you encountered the risen Lord through the Gospel of John?
  • Are there any stories, images, or miracles from John that have particularly touched you in this sermon series? Why do you think it has stood out to you?
  • As a whole group or in smaller pairs: Share your personal reflections from the prompts above. Encourage one another to engage curiosity, confusion, or bigger questions.

CONNECT WITH SCRIPTURE

If needed, read the passage again. Then select the best questions or customize the questions for your group.

  • Review the main points from the sermon outline
  • How did you encounter the risen Lord in the passage and message this week?
  • What questions, observations, or reactions do you have after reflecting on the passage and sermon?
  • How do you describe or explain ‘belief’?
  • How are these final two verses connected to the story of Thomas and Jesus that precedes it?
  • Consider the other scripture passages from the outline. How do they connect to John 20:30-31 and to your own life as a follower of Jesus?
  • In what ways could our perspectives be limited (vs 30)?
  • As we conclude our message series, what themes or stories most challenged you or drew you into deeper intimacy with the risen Lord?

ENGAGE AND EXPLORE

Together: Explore the quote below in connection with John 20:30-31.

“For the word of God is not received by faith if it flits about in the

top of the brain, but when it takes root in the depth of the

heart that it may be an invincible defense to withstand and drive

off all the stratagems of temptation.” -John Calvin

PRAYER

This week, pray following the example of N.T. Wright as he reflected on the whole of John 20. “As we stand there and listen, overhearing Mary’s conversation with the angels in the garden, let the pain of the people you’re with speak itself to Jesus, whether or not they know who he is. Then listen for the name. Let Jesus call your own name, and the name of whoever you’ve brought with you, whoever needs his love and healing today. Then rejoice and give thanks to God for raising Jesus from the dead and bringing to birth the new creation.” -N.T. Wright, John for Everyone
