God on the Move—Just Such a Moment As This

Write by:

Several times in my life I have been blessed by recognizing that God had prepared me for “just such a moment as this.” One such moment came when I met Catalina from Spain.

Our family had hosted 4 international students before we met Catalina and we have hosted 5 more since then. Needless to say, we have loved the experience! Every student has been a great blessing, with relationships lasting to this day.

What made Catalina’s arrival different was that immediately before she was to leave for the U.S., her father had a heart attack and was in a coma. She struggled mightily with whether to go forward with her international exchange year given her close relationship with her dad and the uncertainty about his future, but she knew that her exchange was a dream her father had for her. Her large family encouraged her to go.

On the flight she had to endure radio silence, not knowing what her father’s condition would be when she landed. As we walked the UCSD campus the next day, getting her identification card and then going to Target to buy items for her dorm room, she felt pins and needles as she waited for a call with potentially bad news and indecisive on whether she should fly straight back home. Through each of those moments I was her “mother,” her shoulder to lean on and her prayer partner—a priceless opportunity to show the love of Jesus and one that I will never forget.

I am happy to report that Catalina’s father made a complete recovery and she and we went on to have a fun year together. Catalina now lives in Paris, she has a new baby and we have a lifetime bond. Want to make a difference in someone’s life just by being you? I have an idea for you!
