Gleanings for the Hungry
Gleanings for the Hungry, a Youth-With-a-Mission (YWAM) project is located 40 miles southeast of Fresno, 20 miles north of Visalia and only 40 minutes away from Sequoia National Park. Gleanings has the highest rating (4 stars) with Charity Navigator and they welcome retirees, home school families and youth groups to make a real difference and support the vision of Gleanings for the Hungry: “To feed those in need both physically and spirituality.”
Gleanings for the Hungry began in the summer of 1982. Directors Wally and Norma Wenge with local volunteers were able to process about 15,000 pounds of donated cull fruit using donated equipment in a borrowed raisin dehydration facility. Sun-dried peaches and nectarines produced that first year were used to feed the hungry in Guatemala after a hurricane and flood occurred there. Mercy Ships helped transport the dried fruit to Guatemala and it was distributed by YWAM missionaries. The ministry and operating facility continue to be blessed and has grown over the years. Gleanings now produce over 50 million servings of delicious and healthy dried soup mix each year. Each summer they process and dry fresh peaches – enough to fill about 10 sea containers. Volunteers also produce hand-made warm quilts – several thousand each year!
Since 2004, twice a year, SBPC and other church friends have sent teams of folks who “still have tread on their tires” to Gleanings to work to package a dry soup mix, prepare and package a trail mix, do minor property handyman/woman jobs, or help with kitchen tasks. Many ladies make tied quilts (not hand sewn). Last Spring, our team of 28 (ages 62 to 94) made 1,800,000 portions of soup mix and completed 23 queen-size quilts in four days!!! The following week, our love efforts were sent to comfort hundreds of Haitian earthquake survivors.
Are you interested in being a part of this exciting adventure? Our next team leaves March 10 and leaves March 15. Carpooling, motel-like rooms and RV sites are available.
