Summer in the Psalms: Psalm 146

Message Outline

PSALM 146 (NIV)

1 Praise the Lord.

Praise the Lord, my soul.

2 I will praise the Lord all my life;

I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.

3 Do not put your trust in princes,

in human beings, who cannot save.

4 When their spirit departs, they return to the ground;

on that very day their plans come to nothing.

5 Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob,

whose hope is in the Lord their God.

6 He is the Maker of heaven and earth,

the sea, and everything in them—

he remains faithful forever.

7 He upholds the cause of the oppressed

and gives food to the hungry.

The Lord sets prisoners free,

8 the Lord gives sight to the blind,

the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down,

the Lord loves the righteous.

9 The Lord watches over the foreigner

and sustains the fatherless and the widow,

but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.

10 The Lord reigns forever,

your God, O Zion, for all generations.

Praise the Lord.

Growing our community response of worship:

Praise the Lord… the Lord reigns forever.

I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart; before the “gods” I will sing your praise. I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your unfailing love and your faithfulness, for you have so exalted your solemn decree that it surpasses your fame. Psalm 138:1–2 (NIV)

They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, proclaiming, “The Lord is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.” Psalm 92:14–15 (NIV)

Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together. Psalm 34:3 (NIV)

2. Trust God who is faithful. (v. 3-6)

He is the Maker of heaven and earth— he remains faithful forever.

I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope… put your hope in the Lord, for with the Lord is unfailing love and with him is full redemption. Psalm 130:5,7 (NIV)

3. Follow God who is compassionate and just. (v. 7-9)

The Lord watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow

Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it… The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:14,18 (NIV)

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. James 1:27

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom…. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. James 3:13,17
